Bunting Differences and Basics   by By Mike Chaney

After struggling during the initial stages of the new season, the first and second place hitters, for the ranked collegiate team, started to catch fire. Their game consisted of a bunt and run attack. The tandem’s main concern was acting as table setters for the team’s RBI producers. It was contagious. As the lead off combination’s bunts started to drop safely, team confidence grew and the team started to win.

The humble bunt has a significant role in the outcome of many games. The experts employ the bunt to spark the offense and attain an advantage for their team. Whether it be a base hit attempt, sacrifice, fake, or a squeeze, executing the bunt is paramount to a well rounded team’s success.

In recent years, many teams have strayed from the “slap hitting,” “slash and dash,” and “bunting game” for the more glamorous “power hitting game.” The problem occurs, of course, when your team faces a top notch pitcher and there is no offensive production. If your team’s bats fall asleep, the bunting game can provide a quick offensive jump start. In addition, bunting can get runners on base, advance runners into scoring position, create defensive movement, build team confidence, and force the defense into errors. By placing your opponents on their heels with an aggressive bunting game, it will ultimately open doors and wake up the slumbering aluminum of your power hitters.
