Teenage Alcohol and Drug Use
While those of us involved with youth and athletics would like to believe that a teen' s commitment to a sport would be insurance against drug and alcohol usage, research does not hold that to be true. It is myth and a misconception that athletes will tend to avoid alcohol and other drugs because they are in training or don't have the time to be involved, and adherence to such a myth becomes a dangerous form of denial. Since coaches and athletes spend a great deal of time together, coaches are in an important position to recognize changes and problems, and may very well be one of the only adult figures who can make a significant intervention on an athlete heading down the wrong path.
